Feb 12th, 2007

Tonight was my late night at work, then grocery shopping.. before getting home.  So, all I’ve done today is add a few more tidbits to my archery history section (link is above).  I have different things that people have sent me, I’m hoping that maybe this week, I will have all of them posted on that page(s), so I can get a better idea of how to organize it, so it flows well, is easy to find things, etc.  I haven’t even started posting most of the research that I’ve done, yet.  J

If anyone has anything to add, please let me know.  Please include your source.  J  I figure this project will take a while, but I would like to work on it in sections, so I can start making progress on it.  I’m hoping this will also help serve as inspiration to some of those archers who would like to improve their gear and/or pick an appropriate persona for what they enjoy doing on the field.  J

Feb 11th, 2007 pm

I finished the rapier ca chart: www.combat-archery.com/rapiercachart.htm with the information that I’ve collected so far.  I’ve updated the CA Rapier page, with the suggestions/recommendations that I’ve heard from those kingdoms that have it.  www.combat-archery.com/rapierca.htm

I also added an upcoming event in Atlantia and Lillies in Calontir.  Please keep the event information coming in, since there’s no way I can keep up with all of them myself.  J

Feb 11th, 2007

Ok, I got more information confirmed on my missile charts and marshal contact page.  I also updated the tube page and crossbow page.  I have most of the information and at least ½ of both pages have been confirmed.  So, progress is being made.  J  In a few minutes, I’ll start work on my rapier/CA chart.. and see how far I get with that J  I should have that chart up today, hopefully.  Then the next week or so, to get it confirmed by the kingdom marshals.

BTW, my thanks to all of the kingdom marshals for their help, especially for answering all of my specific questions.

I’m trying to decide what I want to work on next, after the rapier chart.  I just really like charts, I think it really helps us see how close our rules are.. and whether we can travel and use our equipment in other kingdoms.  I’m trying to decide if I should include tape type with the fiberglass shaft chart, since some kingdoms only allow strapping tape and some only allow electrical tape, most allow either.  Hmm.. I’ll think on it a bit, since I think it may be more confusing then helpful.  I also need to decide how best to include when a kingdom requires more padding then the Society, especially on fiberglass/UHMW combinations.  My eventual goal is that archers can use the charts to know if their arrows/bolts are legal elsewhere.. or if they need to modify it..  or ideally, before you make your first set, you can see what is legal in the areas/kingdoms that you like to visit, so hopefully one set will work.  J

Time to get back to work.

Feb 10th, 2007

Ok, I have most of the marshal contact page updated.  This is the page that lists the names and email addresses for each kingdoms Combat Archery Marshal.

www.combat-archery.com/marcont.htm .  I also changed the chart I had for fiberglass and wooden shafts, with what each kingdom allows, including blunt type.  A lot of the kingdoms in North America either have or currently are phasing out wooden shafts, so I dropped that chart below the fiberglass one.  I realized it would be helpful to know what APDs each kingdom allows, so I added that chart to the right of the fiberglass one.  I believe I have most of these combinations correct.  I’ve bolded the kingdom names, that I got confirmation on what the chart says.  I should have the rest confirmed in the next week or so.  www.combat-archery.com/kingarrowchart.htm

Eventually, I need to make that page with the kingdom missile combinations allowed, easier to find.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I’m taking a short break and I’ll get to work updating the Kingdom tubual missile chart.  That should be done tonight as well.  J  I also have 2 upcoming events to add, thanks to Hugh and Brian.  If anyone else knows of upcoming events that allow CA, please let me know.

I’m hoping tomorrow to start on my crossbow chart, what poundages, inch pounds, etc.. are allowed where.. and if I have time, I’m creating a new chart to let people know which kingdoms allow combat archery with rapier.  Along with what is allowed to be used on the rapier field.  J

If I have some time after that, I’ll see what else I can add and I’ll update it here.  J

Feb 7th, 2007

We just had an audit at work this week, so I haven’t had a lot of time this week to update my website.  I’ve still updated some parts, but I’ll have most of the weekend to work on it.  J

Feb 5th, 2007

I’ve updated the Marshal contact page, new approval page, kingdom arrow chart, legal missiles page, upcoming event page, archery armor page, etc.  I will continue to update the marshal page and what’s legal where (arrows/bolts) as I hear back from each kingdom Combat archery marshal.  J

Dec 31st, 2005

I’ve updated the Kingdom CA marshal page.  I think there may be a couple more corrections that I need to make on these, if you see a listing that’s wrong, please let me know.  I’ve started working on updating this website, so please check back for more changes J

June 28th, 2005

I’ve updated the experimental pages.  I checked with Our DSEMCA, Eadric who said currently there are no experimental missile weapons being tested.   Any questions about this should be sent to him, since if you are conducting any testing or would like to.. he needs to know about it and you should be submitting reports, etc to him.  You must have his approval to do any live/on the field testing.

March 30th, 2005

I’ve updated the marshal contact list, since there have been a number of changes..

March 1st, 2005

Ok, I made a new chart.  This should help our archers who want to get a crossbow.  It shows what inch pounds and poundages are allowed where.  I’ve also added a section on whether prod covers, Tunji’s and/or fiberglass rod prods are allowed in which kingdoms.  If there’s anything else that people want added, please let me know.  As you can see, it’s not finished yet, but we’ve made a good start.  I hope to have most of it done by the end of the week. www.combat-archery.com/crosschart.htm

Thanks,

Tessa

Feb. 20th, 2005

Ok, I’ve updated the marshal contact page.  We’ve had 5 or 6 changes in the past 3 months.  I think I have everyone updated, but if I missed anyone, please let me know, ASAP.

Thanks,

Tessa

Feb. 11th, 2005

I’ve updated my supplier list, the new approval page and the upcoming event page.  If you are planning on attending Estrella, check out the page:  There is a CA meeting with the Deputy Society Marshal for Combat Archery, THL Eadric.  There is also a more Social gathering/party and a combat crossbow competition.

Feb. 11th, 2005

I just wanted to clarify something.  A number of people have gotten confused over who is doing/updating this Combat Archery website.  This website is still mine, it’s something that I would like to maintain as a resource for the combat archery community.  THL Eadric is the new Society Combat archery marshal and I’ve offered to post any updates or changes to the rules here for him, to help get the word out.  So, hopefully, we will see some posts from him, as major news and updates occur.

If anyone has any suggestions or  knows of stuff  that should  be updated on this website, please let me know.  I also have some good news to share.  A good friend of mine Master Charles is working on the history of archery and he has his PhD in History.  J  I believe he plans on taking up where Evian left off, I feel he will continue Evian’s start and expand it even further where Evian would have liked to see it go.

If anyone has any how-to’s or tips that they are willing to share, please let me know.  I would love to see this website become an easy to use resource for new and more experienced archers.  Helping our new archers learn how to make items and hopefully even giving our more experienced archers some tips or ideas of better ways to do x..

Thanks to everyone who has and is helping with this website.  Your help is very appreciated.

Tessa, Princess of AEthelmearc

Feb 8th, 2005

Ok, I’ve started working on updating my list of suppliers.  If anyone knows of other suppliers that I should add and/or anything on my supplier page that needs to be updated, please let me know.

Thanks,

Tessa, Princess of Aethelmearc

Jan 19th, 2005

Ok, Things were a lot busier than I expected over the holidays.  I’m still working on getting things organized, but I should hopefully be able to start updating my site again, hopefully at least once a week.  I would still love to add more how-to articles.  I’ve gotten some emails asking what upcoming events will I be attending and how things are going in fair AEthelmearc, so I’m considering adding or more likely expanding my personal page linked above to keep everyone updated.  So, if you have anything new you would like to share with us (like new articles) or any that you would like to see, please let me know.

Thanks,

Tessa, Princess of AEthelmearc

Nov 1st, 2004

I updated the event page for upcoming events that include Combat Archery.  I would like to include more events on this page, if your kingdom has any CA events or if you know of any that I haven’t included, please let me know.  Any information that you could include, perhaps an idea of how much combat archery is included, link to a site for the event or whatever, please let me know.  Thanks.

A change in the Deputy SEM for Combat Archery Position

Greetings All,

I am flattered HRH Tessa and Earl Robert and chosen to let me try and fill the shoes that HRH Tessa has so capably filled.  I promise that I'll try and do my best to continue with the good work that she has been doing.

I know and have worked with many of you over the past few years but for those who do not know me, let me further introduce myself.

I live in the Shire of Gates Edge in the Kingdom of Ansteorra which is  the northern edge of the greater Houston, TX metro area.  I have been involved with our Society since 1984 where is started in the Shire of Graywood also here in Ansteorra (Nacogdoches, TX).  I spent about 4 years living in the Outlands in the Barony of Unser Hafen (in Loveland , CO).  I enjoyed the time I spent in Outlands but during that phase of my life I was more involved with career and less involved with the SCA and as such my SCA involvement was limited to a very few events and the local equestrian practices.

Mundanely I work for Hewlett Packard where I am a Systems Engineer on the Industry Standard Servers, Engineering Problem Management Team and I live in Pinehurst, TX.

My first experience with Combat Archery was I think in 1987 at a Bordermarch Melees.  This was with a 30# fiberglass bow and wooden shafted arrows with modified Markland blunts.  That early interest and inspiration in SCA archery was provided by Master Leon Donne and Master Iolo FitzOwen.  I'll use both bow and crossbow on the battlefield as the mood strikes me or as I feel is warranted by the particular scenario and equally enjoy spending time at target archery and honing my skills as an archer craftsman.  Being an Ansteorran I an euqally comfortable with Rapier or Armored combat Archery.

Throughout my time in the SCA I have served most local offices and numerous kingdom offices including the positions of Regional and Kingdom Archery Marshals.  For the past several years I have enjoyed working on Gulf Wars with Master Seamus, Mistress Qaylah, Baron Iain, and Sir Erika where I think we have made good strides in improving the CA activities and working through any problems that have arisen.

For my accomplishments and service to the Archery Community the Crowns of Ansteorra have honored me with membership in the Order of the Arcus Majoris of Ansteorra which is our Grant Level high order for archery.  I currently have a single Arcarius but will be taking another in a little under two weeks.

Over the next few days I may make some minor changes to my extended team but I don't expect them to be radical.  Earl Robert has already told us what he thinks needs to be done and we need to come up with the right way of doing that.  Those priorities for this office have not changed.

Always in Service,

HL Eadric Anstapa

Oct 9th, 2005

Greetings,

On Saturday, Oct the 9th, my Husband, Syr Malcolm won the AEthelmearc Crown while fighting for me.

As Corpora prohibits holding a Society office while standing as Princess or Queen, I have resigned my position as DSEM to my backup/replacement, THL Eadric Anstapa after discussing the transition with Earl Robert.

Eadric may be contacted at:  eadric@scabrewer.com

I really enjoyed being DSEMCA, especially meeting all of the wonderful combat archers/fighters and our hard working marshals, out there. It was wonderful to visit several different kingdoms and inter-kingdom events, getting a chance first-hand to see how CA is done in different areas. Thanks very much to all of those people who made those trips possible and made my visits so much fun.  It was pretty hard at times, with some tough decisions, but I had the help of some awesome KEM/KDEM's and many others, who provided a ton of help.  It's a lot of work, but well worth it.  I'm hoping everyone who offer to help Eadric as well, actually I'm sure you will.  :)

I know Eadric will do a great job.  He's is (and has been) very active in the Combat archery community.  He's also been the one who did the hard work in testing and comparing fiberglass shafts, determining what we should used for Siloflex standards (in CA) and offering his help and chronograph with crossbow testing.  (etc, etc).  I have complete confidence in his ability to

do an excellent job.  He's also very good in responding promptly via email, which I consider a major bonus.

I will not be disappearing, although I expect I will not be as active on the lists, especially during the next two weeks.  If there's anything that I can help with, I will be happy to do so.  I've talked to Eadric and he will also be posting updates and any "news" on the www.combat-archery.com website.

Our Coronation will be sometime in April, I'll send updates out as We get more information.  If anyone wants to attend, please do so, since it would be wonderful to see the faces of the friends that I've made during the past two years, at Our coronation.

We will be King and Queen at Pennsic, so I will be fighting in the war point battles, especially those including combat archery.  We are hearing rumors of War on our Borders, so we need to prepare for that.  So, We would love to see as many combat archers on the field, as possible. If anyone needs or wants a unit or army to fight with at Pennsic, I would welcome you to fight with Us. :)  We will provide archer guards for any archers who join us, as well as welcome you with open arms.  Even if it's just one battle, I would like to see how many archers we could get on the field at one time.  :)

I meant to keep this short, but it didn't work.  I could go on even longer with the praise of everyone who helped me and/or worked so hard for combat archery in the past couple of years, but it would take up too many pages. Trust me, your hard work is/was greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

HRH Tessa the Huntress

Sept 23rd, 2004 1:00 pm  site updates

Ok, I’ve dropped the Icicle design from current testing.  I’ve updated the live testing, non-live testing, dropped/failed designs and the new approval pages.  I played around a bit with the layout and I like it better.  I have some ideas to improve them more (perhaps later this week, like Saturday).  In the meantime, I would like some feedback on whether small pictures like what I have on the failed page are helpful or if you prefer the structure of the live testing page, where all of the pictures are on a separate page.  I would like to keep the main page, printer friendly.. so please let me know which way you prefer and why.  Thanks for the input.

Sept 23rd, 2004  Autumn War Trip

I’m back from Autumn War.  I wanted to post a quick thank you here to everyone who helped.  Thanks to Loric, William Arwemakere, and the archers who contributed fro my air fare by shooting at William J  Many thanks to House Burning Bear for all of their help and for opening their camp/house to me.  They provided a tent, cot, bedding, kept me fed and warm J  They also (thanks Volund/Khaez) provided me with arrows, a Bow (Gabriel) and a helm (I missed his name) so I could fight on Saturday.  Sunday, August  loaned me his very nice bow and arrows, as did Burning bear (who also loaned me his personal helm, since their loaner one was too big) and Sylvanoes.   Gabriel was nice enough to pick me up and take me to and from the event.

I’m certain I left out some people (sorry).  I really liked the site.  I had a great time, from the ride there, until I had  to leave.  Everyone was friendly and if I had drunk everything that was offered to me, I would have sloshed as I walked (LOL).  I had a good time fighting, with my own archer guard (thanks Burning Bear), Ronin (spelling?).  I hate to admit it, but I was really spoiled and I actually enjoyed being escorted everywhere (usually I like to roam by myself).  House Burning Bear and Loric made certain that I was well taken care of and I didn’t want for anything.

I had a great time shooting in the “box tourney” on Sunday, I’m out of practice though.  I’m going to make certain I’m ready next year.  J  I still won a prize, which suits my Vandal urges just fine J  Thanks August, jewelry is always a good prize, especially when it’s silver.

I only have 3 regrets for the event.  1. That I wasn’t able to stay for longer, 2. That we weren’t able to do the box tourney for longer on Sunday, 3. That I hadn’t shipped my arrows, so I had more to shoot during the battles on Saturday (you can never have too many arrows), 4. That I hadn’t practiced before the event, I still got some kills, but I should have gotten a good number more.  My surgery and recovery time was only a good excuse thru August (IMO).  However, the good news is that it didn’t hurt to shoot.

That was my attempt at a “brief” thank you.  I had a great time, thanks to some wonderful people.  I just wish An Tir wasn’t so far away, sinceit’s likely I won’t get to see any of them until Pennsic or Autumn War next year.  FWIW, if anyone is looking for a fun-filled event to attend, the days were perfect (just a bit chilly) during the early morning, I strongly recommend that you try to make Autumn War next year.  J

Sept 14th, 2004

Reminder: Remember to pad your half gauntlets.  This has been a fairly ignored Society level rule for a while, but on directive from the Society Earl Marshal, enforcement on this has stepped up.

I’ve updated the APD section in the draft rules, the experimental page and the fiberglass/wooden kingdom missile chart.

I also added a page for combat archery defintions

Sept 12th

I’ve updated the Golf tube nock page.  THL Bartholomew Hightower of Canterbury was nice enough to take some pictures of the assemebly of some crossbow bolts, with these nocks.  Click here to see them.

Sept 11th

I’ve made some changes and updates to the missile combat handbook (draft), updated the CA marshals page and the event page.

Sept 7th, 2004

CA Terms:

I have a request..   I would prefer it if people, especially marshals referred to picking up arrows/bolts, prior to taking them to be re-inspected, as retrieving rather than gleaning.  I think if we used these definitions that it would help:

Retrieving: the act of picking up shot arrows and bolts that have already been shot.  Usually, this is followed by getting them re-inspected at an inspection point or by a non-fighting marshal.

Gleaning: the act of picking up shot arrows and bolts and self-inspecting them, prior to re-using them.  Only tubular style missiles may be gleaned.

If anyone wants to improve my wording, please feel free.  If we could encourage everyone to use these terms, it should cut down on some of the confusion.

Thanks,

Tessa the Huntress

August 28th, 2004

I’m back from Pennsic and I would like to give my Pennsic thanks.

I would like to thank several of our hard working combat archery marshals for their assistance at Pennsic.  Several of them went above and beyond (IMO) in helping, especially with inspecting.

In no particular order:

Brun Canutesson (Middle KDEM for CA)

Jean Paul (Middle)

Raven (Middle MIT)

Ce'tach (AEthelmearc KDEM for CA)

Brad Broda (AEthelmearc)

Sir Tnek (Atlantian KDEM for CA)

Martin (Atantian)

Gorm of Berra (Atlantia MIT)

Siegfried Sebastian Faust (Atlantian KDEM for Target archery and one of my deputies, grin)

Richard Woodenbridge (east)

Ishido (East KDEM for CA)

William McNaughton (Meridian)

Hugh Prescott (Calontir)

We also had a gentle from Ealdomere who helped on one of our busy mornings, but I can't remember his name.. and another gentle, I believe he was from the East Kingdom, who also helped out.  I've been trying too hard to remember their names, so there's no hope of me remembering it tonight.  If anyone knows, please let me know.

In addition, we got two donations of much needed bow scales (previously there were none in the Pennsic marshal supplies, just what the marshals themselves provided).  Thanks to Brun Canutesson from the Middle and Baron Cedric the Humble (AEthelmearc/Meric Archery) who donated the second, brand new still in original packaging.  :)

Brun also found the coolest toys/tools.. a small flip calculator and 3' tape measure, both clipped on a D ring, making it easy to keep up with them and they were great for checking and measuring bow weights and inch pounds.  He also brought a digital scale, that we got to use to check some weights.  :)

Brun also provided IKCAC markers and a safety backdrop, so perhaps next year we can do some combat archery shooting/testing during the first week near the marshals point :)

He said he has plans that he'll send me on how he made his spiffy cart (perfect for hauling large numbers of missiles).  Once I get it, I'll make one for use of the combat archers next Pennsic.  With a cart, we can just throw everything in the cart and haul it to inspection point, then sort and inspect everything.  I think that will help, since this year people could

only carry so much, so missiles sometimes were left down on the field, until the following morning.

I would also like to make 1 or more CA inspection banners/pennants. However, I would like some input on which would be better.. one of the super long pennants.. or a banner made so that you can see the entire banner all of the time (i.e. no moving in the wind).  I would also like some ideas and input on the specific measurements.. as well as ideas of what and how to do the banner pole.

I really appreciate the help of everyone.  We could really use more help doing combat archery inspections at Pennsic.  If you are interested, please contact your kingdom or regional marshal to see what you need to do.  If you were frustated and tired of waiting for inspection, just think of how much quicker it would go, if we could all inspect each others gear.  If you need

any help in contacting your local/kingdom marshal, please let me know.

I strongly believe that every archer should be able to inspect their own gear.  It will need to be re-inspected by a different marshal before the battle, but if all or most of our archers were qualified marshals, it would go much quicker and much smoother, since we will be the second set of eyes, not the primary ones.

To that end, if anyone is interested and willing to learn how to inspect CA equipment and/or their own gear, just let me know.  I'll be happy to teach you or find another marshal who may be closer who will be willing and able to teach you.

We need everyone's help.  Just like we all pulled together and worked together on inspecting everything for the 2nd castle battle, we need to work together and increase the number of combat archery marshals, before any of our existing ones get burned out.

Thanks,

Tessa the Huntress

Ok, I just added an article by Iaen Mor on “How to make a Thrust and Throw Javelin”.  Here is my page for How-to articles. You can see I can still use more articles.  If you’ve written a CA related one, that I can post on this site, please let me know.

Thanks very much,

Tessa

Ok, I’m adding more and more pages to my website.  With Pennsic and many CA projects to do, I don’t have the time to spend days working on the layout of my website, making it easier to navigate and find the new pages.  I will work on that when I get home from Pennsic.  Until then, I’ll put links to the new pages at the top of this page.

I think it would be cool to having a page explaining the history of CA in the Society. Perhaps a couple of sentences over how, when and by whom.. CA got adopted into each kingdom?

So, if anyone knows of the history of CA in their kingdom.. let me know and I'll add stuff as I get it.

Thanks,

Tessa

Ok, I’ve updated the Siloflex page, the upcoming CA event page and I’ve added two pages, one for upcoming CA classes and regular CA fighter practices.  The pages are pretty slim and I would love to add more practices, classes and upcoming events.  So if you know of any, please let me know.

 Thanks.

Greetings!

I'm trying to get a feel for what's being used in different areas.  Can you reply back with:

1. Your name

2. Kingdom

3. How long have you been a combat archer?

4. What type of missiles do you use? (shaft type, blunt, arrow or bolt?)

5. Do you use a bow or crossbow?

6. What is the poundage?  If it's a crossbow and you know the draw length, please mention it as well.

Thanks very much.  If you can answer this for other archers that you know, please send me that information as well.  Please forward this to other archers that you know.

Thanks,

Tessa the Huntress, Deputy Society Marshal for Combat Archery

July 19th, 2004

I’ve started updating the website.  I’ve added some thumbnail photos to the arrow/bolt page.  Please let me know what you think.  I need photos of these blunts, to finish up the page:  cone head, markland, modified markland, golf tube with a tennis ball.  If anyone has a photo of one of these, please let me know.   I’l be updating my help page later tonight, I need everyone’s help to try and improve this website.  You can see we do have a lot of people visiting and using this site, so I would like to improve it, so it will be a bigger and better help, to new archers, as well as experienced archers and  marshals.  If I could get one contribution (photo, tip or even a short or long how-to article) from the people who visit the site, that would mean a major improvement in the resources and help that the website would provide for everyone.

I would like some opinions.  I think if I put thumbnails along with the charts, that it would help and it would be a bit more user friendly than making people view each page separately.  I would like to set it up so if you click on the thumbnail that it would take you to a larger, more detailed photo, sometimes to a page with more information, as well as additional photos.  What do you think of this.  Do you like the charts with the thumbnails or not?  Should I make a clickable/printable chart (option) for each chart without any photos?  Do you have any suggestions, tips and/or can you provide me with better photos?

Thanks,

Tessa the Huntress

I started the page for photos of combat archers.  I’ve gotten a couple of photos sent to me, but I would like more, since I know we have a lot more archers out there.  Thnaks very much to those archers who have sent me photos.  J

July 18th

I just received word that Lord Rupert the Persistent, mka Rupert R. Gaddy passed away yesterday.  He was a long-time combat archer/fighter in Atlantia. He was the Kingdom combat archery marshal for several years. I’m enclosing the announcement that was sent out below.  A friend is checking to see if there is anything that we can do to help Rupert’s family, his wife and children.  Please keep phone calls and such to a minimum for directions or to send flowers or such.  I’m certain this is a very rough time for his friends and families, so please act appropriately.

“Please accept this anouncement as notification that Rupert R. Gaddy of Newberry, SC passed away on 7/17/04. Funeral Services will be held on 7/19/04 at 4:00pm in Dillon, SC.  The service will be held at Kannaday's Funeral Home 1252 Hwy. 57 South, Dillion, SC 29536 (843-774-7641). We apologize if you are hearing about this tragic event through this email instead of in person or by phone, but this email is being sent to all of the contacts in Rupert's email address book in hopes of reaching as many of his friends as possible. ”

I will be adding his name and any accounts/stories of him to the memory page.  Rupert was an old friend of mine, from the time that I started working with and later authorizing him in combat archery, especially since we both lived in the same Barony for several years and I am very sorry to be the bearer of this sad news.  If anyone has any stories, accounts or memories that they would like to share of Lord Rupert (or anyone on the “in Memory” page, including suggestions for other people to add to the page), please send them to me.

Thanks,

July 15th 5:30 pm

I’m getting ready to start posting Pennsic information and requests for Pennsic help.  I’m going to make a separate page for all Pennsic information, but I will be adding stuff in stages to that page, so please check back.  We will need help from the different CA marshals who are attending the War.  Thanks:

Greetings!

I'm trying to get an idea of numbers, of who and when we will have different CA marshals to help us with inspections at Pennsic.  If you are going to Pennsic and you are willing and able to help do combat archery inspections, please let me know.  I would like to know when you are arriving on site.

I believe this year we are going to try and do some inspections the evening/afternoon before the war point battles, so we don't have such a mad rush in the mornings before the battle.  So if you can help with inspections in the mornings before the battles and/or in the late afternoon/early evenings, please let me know.

I'm also planning on running some classes and refresher ones on doing Combat archery inspections.  This is more for those of you who may not be as familiar with missile styles from other kingdoms and/or may not be up to date on the most recent changes in the standards.  If anyone is interested in attending I'll post the times later and I'll try to post times at inspection point, I'll be happy to do reviews and/or teach someone from scratch on how to do CA inspections.  Just let me know and I'll find a time to work with you and/or any of your marshals.  :)

Basically, I'm working on expanding the numbers of qualified marshals that can do good combat archery inspections.

Baron Ishido [baronishido@yahoo.com] is the Combat archery marshal in charge for Pennsic.  He asked me to run CA inspection for him for the first week and he will be at Pennsic for the second.  I do plan on helping him during the second week, but I know we can always use more marshals.. especially before the battles.  I'm trying to encourage people to get their gear inspected early, but there are always people who just arrived on site or weren't able to get inspected earlier.

The classes will be open to anyone who is interested.  If you know of any combat archers who may be interested, please let them know.  IMO, archers should be inspecting their own gear before they get to inspection point and the marshals should be the second check.  I know a number of our archers already do that, but I would like to increase that number.

Please email me if you have any questions or if you can help.

I’ve updated my event page and my schedule page, events that I will be attending and those that I would like to attend.  I just checked and airfare to autumn war is only $200 -$220, instead of the $350 that it was last week.  So, if I can come up that money then I will be going to Autumn War in An Tir.  This time I will be fighting/shooting.  L

Lu-shan is moving, so he sent out the notice below.  If anyone needs blunts for Pennsic, or before next year, you should order before the end of July:

“We're moving to Trimaris in August, so I'll have to close the shop as

of August 1.  Anyone who wants UHMW blunts this year needs to order

this month at:

www.flatbow.com/UHMW

I should be re-opening sometime after the new year in time for Gulf

Wars orders.

Thanks!

OK, below is a post that a gentle made on the armor archive.  If anyone can help him, please do so.  The website looks

very promising to me.  Now, I asked a couple of months ago for photos of those of you that do combat archery.  I wanted ones of you in armor, preferably when using a bow.  Now if you have one of you while using a bow and another of using a different weapon, that would be fine.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

"Need pics of you / equiptment / archery and thrown weapons in action and other cool pics / vids for http://www.honorblade.com/demo.archery.html

Please include your re-enactor name and title for crediting.

THANKS!!

I have 3 reasons for this request.  One, I am very, very tired of hearing fighters that don't know better say that all or most combat archers look horrible and/or don't care about their appearance or looking as period as possible while on the field. IMO, based off of the inspections that I've done during the past couple of years), I believe most of the combat archers look good. Perhaps even better than the "average" rattan fighter. J

So, my thought was if I could get photos of as many of us as possible, then I would post them on my website.  Then everyone can see what most combat archers wear. :) The second, I've gotten a number of requests about what armor is period for archers and/or requests for ideas for good looking CA armor.  I figured if I posted what people are wearing,

it could help those starting out.  I also think it's likely that photos could encourage those of us who could stand to improve our gear.

The third reason.. I think it would be nice to have faces or at least armor/devices to go with the names of those of you who talk on this list. It would be nice to know who you are, since we've seen your photo, so we can go up and say hi at events.

Unfortunately, I only got a couple of replies for my requests of photos.  I have a scanner, so I can use regular photos or .jpg, gif (etc).  Now if you don't have any photos.. I'm going to try and remember to have my digital camera at inspection point at Pennsic and at other upcoming events.  So if it's ok with you, let me know and I'll (or we can get someone else if I'm slammed packed busy) can take a photo with my camera.  In the set battles (like the bridge), I think I’ll see if I can get some photos of archers in action.

It would be nice to have some faces to go with names.  I believe we are fighting some stereotypes, so knowing a bit more to go with the photos, would be an added bonus.  SCA name, how long you've been in, home kingdom, how long you've been authorized in CA and if you are authorized in any other weapons forms.  I'll be happy to add more questions or a short bio (I can link it to a separate page if necessary).  I just know too many fighters who think the average combat archer has only been doing CA for 6 months to a year or so, never practices, wears carpet armor (uncovered) if they wear

anything and is too scared to ever think about, let alone use another weapons form.  I would like to counter those beliefs and I think pictures will be a good start.  We still have to get them to visit the site, but I think we can do that.

So if anyone has any photos, please let me know.  If you have any photos of other archers (that don't mind my posting their photos), please send those as well. Please feel free to forward this to other lists. I would love to have a huge turn-out.

Thanks very much for the help,

I’m starting to update my website and I’m trying to get the timing and locations worked out for Pennsic Combat archery meetings, classes, etc.  I’ve notice my event calendar sorely needs more combat archery events.  If your group is hosting a combat archeyr practise or event or if you know of one in another area, please let me know.  Thanks.

May 25th, 2004

Aethelmearc has a new KDEM for CA, Lord Ce’tach Fitzgibbon.  His contact information has been added to the marshal contact page.  I also noted that the link for their rules changed, so that’s been corrected, too.  I also added Marcus Waffenshmied to the list, he’s the new kingdom archer for Lochac.

While I was at it, I double checked the other links to kingdom/principality websites (CA rules).  I corrected the one for Avacal and Atenveldt, the rest of the links worked.  J

If anyone finds any links that don’t work, please let me know, so I can correct them ASAP.  Thanks,

Tessa

Atenveldt now has a new combat archery email list.  I added it to the marshal contact page.

May 12th, 2004

I added a new page on my website.  It’s dedicated to Lord Evian Blackthorne.  I would like to use that page to note those who have added/helped/etc.. combat archeyr/,missile combat, but who have passed on.
